Outstanding Primary Teacher Award

We are thrilled to announce that Mrs Asome was recognised for her work in the area of dyslexia at the recent 2015 Victorian Education Excellence Awards, winning the Outstanding Primary Teacher Award. Minister for Education James Merlino presented the award to Mrs Asome at an awards ceremony at the Regent Plaza Ballroom on Friday 30th October, World Teachers’ Day in Australia.

Mrs Asome is a Foundation to Year 2 teacher at Bentleigh West and she also supports other teachers to profile students’ strengths and weaknesses. These efforts have had a positive impact on student achievement and her team’s highly-regarded methods have been mirrored by neighbouring schools.

 We’re enormously proud of Mrs Asome and the recognition that this award brings for her work in the area of dyslexia. She is very passionate and enthusiastic about her work and this extends beyond the school gate. She has presented at numerous Australian Dyslexia Association support groups and has advised schools in other states. In accepting the award, Mrs Asome said “I am deeply honoured to be recognised for doing something that I am truly passionate about and that despite this being an individual achievement award, I am sure that you understand that there are many people that have been truly instrumental in making this happen.”

 “The whole school and especially the Prep team have embraced change and this with the support of Jodi Clements (President Australian Dyslexia Association) and Tanya Forbes (Creator of ‘Outside The Square – A professional development resource for Teachers) made this a reality.” “Teacher’s must be open to new approaches and look at evidence and research in developing pedagogy to ensure each and every student excels.”

Bentleigh West Primary School is well recognised for its best practice approaches to literacy and numeracy and the school was a finalist in the Outstanding Inclusive Education Award for 2015. This nomination recognised the school’s approach of early intervention, student profiling, explicit and repetitive instruction and the provision of support – the combination of which has delivered significant outcomes. The Victorian Education Excellence Awards recognise inspirational teachers, principals, business managers and support staff who improve young lives and give Victorian children the skills, courage and curiosity they need to be their best.
