Dyslexia and MSL -Sydney News
"Dyslexia is from Greek and it means difficulty with words, basically it is where children have a difficulty with reading and writing and spelling," teacher and IMSLE Presenter Kate Finnie told A Current Affair.
Currently teachers go through university without any specialised training to manage dyslexia in the classroom.
"There is a heck of a lot of snake oil around, sadly some of the literacy programs in schools have been shown, not just not to work but even to make things worse."
A message that certainly resonates with teachers like Ms Finnie.
"The science of reading is based on 40 years of research and it is understanding how the brain reads, how our brain looks at those squiggles on the page and makes sense of them," Ms Finnie said.
