The Institute for Multisensory Structured Language Education (IMSLE) is a Ministry of Education (NZ) approved quality assured provider for SLA PLD for targeted and tailored (Tier 2 & 3) teaching to support the Year 0-6 staffing entitlement.
The Associate course supports teachers in translating key research into effective practice, while building deep expertise in applying principles and core elements of a Structured Literacy Approach, as outlined in the English Learning Area (ELA) of the New Zealand Curriculum. IMSLE has 20+ years developing and delivering evidence based SLA courses to schools and teachers.

IMSLE has extensive experience supporting schools to implement a whole school Structured Literacy model, grounded in responsive teaching and aligned with all tiers of an RTI (MTSS) framework
In a snapshot
The IMSLE PLD will be delivered over four school terms and comprises the following:
- Core delivery is 5 consecutive days of facilitated training, includes all training materials and resources
- 8 Community of Practice sessions over four terms, delivered on-line
- Mentoring and coaching during the practicum and course duration
- Guided IMSLE Practicum over 12 months, regular weeklytier 2 and 3 IMSLE SLA teaching with an approved focus student- this forms the basis of a thorough evidence based case study. IMSLE will guide you for the duration of the practicum for maximum documented results. IMSLE supplies all necessary pre to post progress diagnostics, templates, guides, lesson logs and IMSLE Student Profile. IMSLE Practicum hours will usually meet or exceed 100 hours. Desired hours meet international accreditation standards with ADA.
- Extra support and advice on structuring a whole school model
- Free access to specific targeted and tailored content for all elements of SLA as outlined in the English learning area (ELA), including supports for students from culturally diverse backgrounds
- On-line access to IMSLE training resources and supports which supports content to practice
- Teachers will be confident in relevant test selection-
- Access to IMSLE diagnostic- All Attendees will have access to the extensive IMSLE dropbox platform (folders and files) where IMSLE documents and resources can be accessed. Folders include supporting documentation, Step by Step guides to successful completion, IMSLE lesson templates, monitoring templates, diagnostic tools, data templates, research readings and more.
- Sharing effective practices discussions on setting up the learning environment and how Tier 2 and 3 fit within a framework of RTI (MTSS).
After the 5 day training component teachers can plan to get started on SLA teaching right away

IMSLE offers a unitised approach incorporating oral language, phonology, orthography, word origins, vocabulary and morphological awareness, handwriting, writing, syntax and semantics.
IMSLE offers an accredited course where individual accreditation is achievable
SLA Teacher graduates of the IMSLE Associate course will receive recognition of their dedication to completion via IMSLE Certification of completion. In addition, SLA Teacher graduates are provided with an opportunity to gain SLA individual recognition & accreditation via (AMADA)

Q. Can my school add a self funded teacher/s to the same IMSLE Associate course as our MoE funded teacher
A. Yes, self funded teachers can attend the same 5 day core training component on any dates advertised
After completion of the core 5 day training component funded teachers will be directed to their practicum and coursework. MoE funded teachers will complete the MoE funded IMSLE PLD structuring, and if applying for individual accreditation they will need to meet the equivalent requirements for AMADA
Q. After attending the 5 day core training component can self funded teachers attend the MoE funded Community of Practice sessions
A. No, the Community of Practice sessions are funded by MoE for the eligible teacher only
Self funded teachers will be supported under the self funded IMSLE Associate course structuring
Q. Are the self funded IMSLE Asscicate course fees less or more than the MoE funds allocated
A. Presently, the self funded fees for the Associate IMSLE course are less
In 2026, IMSLE will raise the Associate IMSLE course fee to align with the MoE funded and approved IMSLE PLD
Q. Who can attend Associate course training
A. Specialist Literacy Teachers, Teachers, Relevant Educators- including Tutors, Teacher Aides, Teacher Assistants, Speech Therapists, Allied Health, Occupational Therapists and others
Q. Can anyone who is self funded attend the IMSLE Associate course training on the dates advertised
